TSGC Call for Volunteers

TSGC has multiple opportunities for you to make a difference in the Texas genetic counseling community by serving as a Board member, volunteer member, or leader of a committee. To learn more about the available opportunities, please visit this page.

Our organization is run entirely on volunteer efforts of our membership, for which we are extremely grateful. The TSGC aims to provide a wide range of volunteer opportunities to encourage our members to become more involved in our community and develop invaluable skills.

Please use the link below to complete an interest survey if you are interested in an ad hoc or committee chair position. For elected Board of Director position interest, please email TSGCElections@gmail.com. Please email the corresponding contact person if you would like additional information about a position.

Elected Board of Director Positions

Please email TSGCElections@gmail.com by Wednesday, September 20 if you are interested in either of these positions. Applications will be due by Friday, September 29.

President-elect

  • The President-elect's responsibilities include overseeing and maintaining communication with the Membership, Genetic Services, Legislative Affairs, and Professional Issues Committees; chairing the Nominating Committee; and fulfilling the duties of the President, should the President be unable to do so.
    • This is a 3-year commitment, as the newly appointed President-elect will serve three one-year terms as President-elect, President, and Past President
    • Candidates must have previously served on the TSGC Executive Board or as a committee chair
    • Estimated Weekly Time Commitment: 1-3 hours

Treasurer

  • The Treasurer's responsibilities include serving on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors and attending all calls and meetings, providing input to the Board on financial matters, performing fiscal accountability including maintaining financial records, preparing and monitoring the budget, and filing taxes. Our current treasurer will stay on until May 2024 in an advisory role to train the newly elected treasurer and help with 2024 tax filing.
    • This is a 2.5 year commitment
    • Estimated Time Commitment: An hour a day in the 3 months leading up to the AEC, otherwise a few hours a month

Appointed Committee Chair Positions

Please complete the interest survey by Friday, September 22 if you are interested in any of the below positions! Of note, committee Chair positions are all 2-year terms (January 2024-December 2025). Please email info@tsgc.org if you have any questions.

Legislative Affairs Committee Chair

  • Main Responsibilities: Keep abreast of legislative issues and bills that may impact the provision of genetic services and/or the profession of genetic counseling within the state of Texas, help lead licensure committee
  • Estimated Time Commitment: Average of 1-2 hours per month. Between 2-15 hours during the legislative session on odd numbered years (January to May), and 2-5 hours the prior August to December

Genetic Services Committee Chair

  • Main Responsibilities: Organize the prospective GC webinar in the fall, monitor NSGC Practice Guidelines, and promote genetics servies in Texas.
  • Estimated Time Commitment: Average of 1 hour per month. Several extra hours around the timing of the Outreach webinar (fall) and analyzing data from the membership survey (beginning of year)

Professional Issues Committee Chair

  • Main Responsibilities: Help assemble and support the Annual Education Conference team.
  • Estimated Time Commitment: 4-8 hours per month, in the three months leading up to AEC, 15-20 hours per month

GC Awareness Day Volunteers

  • Genetic Counselor Awareness Day is just around the corner on November 9th.
  • TSGC is looking for volunteers to assist with planning this year's GC Awareness Day activities.
  • Since we'd like to have some in-person events, our goal is to have representation from all major cities!
  • Volunteers will work closely with GCs who have experience leading these planning efforts in previous years.
  • The expected time commitment is less than 5 hours, including two planning meetings

Student Webinar Volunteers

  • We're looking for two more volunteers to help update and present the annual TSGC webinar in early November (specific date TBD based on volunteer availability.
  • This webinar is designed to target ideally high school and early college students to inform them about the genetic counseling profession.
  • The presentation includes an overview of the profession, various specialties, case examples, and general information about graduate school.
  • The overall time commitment should be about 2 hours including assistance with editing the current slides, practice presenting the other webinar volunteers, and shared presentation of the webinar.
  • It is a very rewarding experience to get to share our beloved profession with (hopefully) the next generation!
