Genetic Counselor Awareness Day 2024

By Aly Badalamenti

On November 14, 2024, genetic counselors celebrated Genetic Counselor Awareness Day. Hosted on the second Thursday of November each year, Genetic Counselor Awareness Day is dedicated to recognizing genetic counselors and raising awareness and appreciation about their role in healthcare.

This year, alongside the National Society of Genetic Counselors, the Texas Society of Genetic Counselors aimed to highlight how genetic counselors help individuals, families, and healthcare providers understand and navigate genetic testing, assess inherited health risks, and make informed medical decisions. TSGC also sought to provide genetic counselors across Texas the opportunity to celebrate their profession, educate the public, and promote the value of genetic counseling in advancing personalized medicine.

TSGC hosted online activities via the TSGC Instagram Account (@TexasGCs). Infographics helped to spread information about genetic counseling and genetic counseling specialties. TSGC members were additionally encouraged to share a shoutout or photo to highlight their department, colleagues, or a fellow genetic counselor. Members were also invited to participate in a genetic counseling-themed crossword puzzle and trivia game. Raffle prize winners included Andrea Moon, Morgan Nutter, Charlise Chen, Jessie Corredor, Melyssa Garner, Madison Granier, Nicole Gostic Cullum, Elise Watson, Emily Magness, and Haley Streff. In-person social events were hosted statewide in each major Texas city. You can find photos from some of these events included below.

We are incredibly grateful to the genetic counselors across the state of Texas for your invaluable contributions to patients, families, and the healthcare community. Your work touches countless lives in profound and meaningful ways. Thank you for your dedication, your empathy, and the positive impact you bring to the field of genetics and beyond. Texas is truly fortunate to have such exceptional professionals leading the way!
